FREE Herringtone Marliday Cowl crochet pattern

Introducing the HERRINGTONE MARLIDAY cowl! This is a fun one to play with texture and color, and challenge yourself with a new stitch! Still plenty of time to whip one (or a few!) up before Christmas!

HERRINGTONE MARLIDAY SOLID/WORSTED WEIGHT VERSION!
Materials:

Solid Version: 295 yds of light worsted/worsted weight yarn (2 skeins of Lion Brand Jeans “Topstitch)
Scissors, Yarn needle, Measuring tape
Stitches and Abbreviations:
CH: chain
SC: single crochet
HDC: half double crochet
YO: yarn over
SL ST: slip stitch
FPHDC: front post half double crochet
BPHDC: back post half double crochet
HDC2tog: half double crochet two together
st(s): stitch(es)
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
The Herringbone Single Crochet (HSC) and Reverse Herringbone Single Crochet (RHSC): please refer to the video on how to work the stitches used in this pattern. The video will also show how to work this stitch, which is typically only worked flat, in the round!
HSC: (begin each row with a CH 1 and single crochet) insert the hook through the “left leg” of the previous stitch, insert into the next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Turn.
RHSC: (*begin each row with a CH 1 and reverse single crochet) insert the hook through the “left leg” of the previous stitch on the right/opposite side of work (from back to front), insert the hook into the next stitch from back to front, yarn over, pull up a loop to the back, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Turn.

Finished Measurements:
20″ circumference at top of neck, 24″ circumference at bottom of neck, 11.5″ tall
Finished measurements are taken after blocking. To ensure correct sizing, please complete a gauge swatch.
Pattern Notes:
Though this cowl will be worked joining in the round, the herringbone stitch (alternating HSC+RHSC row repeats) used in the main body of the cowl is typically worked flat to achieve the alternating slanting rows.
The ribbing sections are worked entirely in the round as normal, without turning.
Shaping is added into the cowl by changing of hook size in the last few sections of herringbone and decreasing of stitches in the top ribbing section, as I really like when the top of my cowl hugs a bit tighter to my neck. If you would prefer an even tube cowl, maintain hook size and stitch count throughout (but be aware this will affect the yardage).
The Single Crochet at the start of the herringbone rows counts as your first stitch.
Tension can be hard to maintain with this stitch, especially when working from the wrong side on herringbone row 2. Take care to pull up loops to the same height and not pull your loops too tightly!
Gauge Swatch: swatch is worked FLAT in Herringbone Single Crochet, with a J/6.0mm hook. Measured blocked.
Total swatch measures 4” by 4” blocked. 4″x 4″ square = 16 sts by 12 rows
Herringtone Marliday Cowl- Solid Version:
Bottom Ribbing: (worked in the round without turning)
1.Using to J/6.0mm (or hook you used to meet gauge)
Foundation HDC 96.
*OR alternate start : CH 96, SL ST to join (don’t twist!) CH 2 (counts as 1st), HDC around, SL ST to join. (96 sts)
2. CH 2 (counts as first FPHDC), *BPHDC in next st, FPHDC in next st* Repeat ** around, BPHDC into last st, SL ST around the “front post” of the starting CH 2 to join (mimicking a FPHDC). (96 sts)
Herringbone Section: (worked “flat,” turning work back and forth between rows)
3. Right side: CH 1, SC in same st, HSC across, SL ST to join. Turn. (96 sts).
4. Wrong side: CH 1, Reverse SC in same st, RHSC across, SL ST to join. Turn. (96 sts)
5- 22. Continue working herringbone row repeats, starting and ending on a wrong side row. (96 sts)
Switch to H/5.0 mm (or whole number size down from what you met gauge with)
23-32. Continue working herringbone row repeats, ending on a wrong side row. (96 sts)
Continuing with your smaller hook size, you will now be working in the round, without turning work for the remaining rows.
Top Ribbing:
33. CH 1 (counts as first HDC ) HDC in next 9 STS, HDC2tog. *HDC in next 10 STS, HDC2tog* repeat ** around., SL ST to join. (88 STS)
34. Ch 1 (counts as first FPHDC), BPHDC, *FPHDC, BPHDC* around, SL ST around the “front post” of the starting CH 2 to join (mimicking a FPHDC). (88 STS)
Finishing:
Cut yarn, sew in all ends. I strongly suggest wet blocking (tutorial here!) your cowl to really get it into the perfect shape and open up those stitches nicely! I gently wet blocked my cowl, and made sure to only “stretch” length wise, rather than width wise, to make my cowl a little longer, but not wider!
